Manatee turning over at Blue Spring State Park
Manatee at Blue Spring State Park

We decided to visit Florida to get some much-needed sunshine during the winter, and wanted to Xperience something unique that we had never seen before. Florida is the home of a beautiful animal known as the manatee. There are only a few species of manatees (aka sea cows) in the world. They have sadly become endangered due to injuries from boat propellers, because they live in shallower waters and tend to be near the surface. Fortunately, there have been several laws enacted to protect these charming and unusual animals.

On December 27th 2018 we began to research locations to visit. There was a good area near Cape Canaveral, but at that time the national park system was closed due to a government shutdown, which also had shut down the national seashore.  Because of this, we had to adjust our plans - but we found a hidden gem! It was a local park called Blue Springs State Park in Florida.  It is just North of Orlando and is an area manatees frequent in winter to care for their young due to the secluded warm waters.  An entire vehicle could enter the park for less than $10 at the time!  We packed lunch and decided to drive from Daytona over to the park.  It truly is a hidden gem because we had to go down several back roads.

Entering the Park

The entrance of the park already had several cars lined up waiting for opening time.  We explored the winding drive to the parking area and looked for the local information center.  We got a map and tried to get our bearings.  The map made the place look bigger than it actually was.  You actually start in the middle of the river and cove area; going right allows you to go upstream.  A nice little pathway followed along the water.  We saw several different manatees in the water a few with young ones; they were sometimes even clustered together in little groups.

We also saw other animals including blue herons, little armadillos, and a variety of fish.  I would suggest taking either a good pair of binoculars or a camera with a good telephoto lens.  We waited patiently for several hours for the best views, since manatees don't naturally move fast.  Our patience paid off as we got to see some actually roll over and show us their faces! The one thing I noticed that surprised and concerned me was a number of little fish I used to see in fish tanks called a Plecostomus. They kept surrounding and even bothering the manatees.  One of the workers mentioned that there is a concern of them stressing the manatees.  Going left on the path, you eventually find a larger body of water where people can enjoy other activities; such as taking a little boat ride out into the lake the springs flow into.

If you go north of Quito, capital of Ecuador, you will find a piece of land with great symbolic significance for this country, it is a large park built to tell everyone the exact location of the equator.

In 1936, it was decided to create a monument at the exact point of the find. This monument, 10 meters high, was present until 1979, when it was decided to create a new and larger one, 30 meters, which highlighted the importance of this place.

Currently, about 500,000 visitors come to this place every year to appreciate this scientific milestone.

The new monument in reference to Ecuador has a pyramidal structure, and is empty inside. But don't be alarmed, you won't feel ripped off if you visit it.

On the top of the pyramid, there is a 5-ton globe that crowns the monument. Without a doubt, it is one of the essential things if you think about what to see in Quito, the City of the Middle of the World.

Finally, within the same monument, a small museum was created with elements of Ecuador's indigenous culture. Different clothing, as well as a review of the various ethnic groups that this country has, and some of the activities they carried out.

It is undoubtedly a great place to learn about the ancient inhabitants of the country, as well as their traditions and learn about the evolution of Ecuador's gastronomy.

Equatorial Line

From this main monument, a line was drawn in an easterly direction, which marks the equatorial line. Visitors to this place are usually photographed on both sides of the Equator symbolizing the change of hemisphere.

Other attractions

In addition to the main monument and the equator, you can find Other Attractions in this enclosure. There are several permanent exhibition pavilions so that when you go, you have exhibitions to see.

  • Guayasamín Pavilion. In this you can find an exhibition of the different works of Oswaldo Guayasamín, the most famous Ecuadorian painter in history.

  • The French Pavilion is located in the French Geodesic Museum. Here you can see all the information about the studies of the Geodetic Mission and information about the Paris Academy of Sciences.

  • Finally, you can't leave the place without seeing the Planetarium, a replica in model of the city of Quito during the colonial era.

The egg on the nail

An egg can be placed on the head of a nail anywhere in the world and not just in the center of the planet. This is explained in the Museum, where it is assured that the experiment has been carried out since its foundation, 30 years ago. Why an egg?, according to guide Ronaldo Mera, because of its characteristics and density. In the museum of the Middle of the World City, the explanation is that due to the speed at which the Earth rotates, the force of gravity tends to cancel out in the area of the equator, so here balancing something would be a little easier.

Skinny Feet
