Xperience the Equator - Middle of the World City located in Ecuador

Skinny Feet

If you go north of Quito, capital of Ecuador, you will find a piece of land with great symbolic significance for this country, it is a large park built to tell everyone the exact location of the equator.

In 1936, it was decided to create a monument at the exact point of the find. This monument, 10 meters high, was present until 1979, when it was decided to create a new and larger one, 30 meters, which highlighted the importance of this place.

Currently, about 500,000 visitors come to this place every year to appreciate this scientific milestone.

The new monument in reference to Ecuador has a pyramidal structure, and is empty inside. But don't be alarmed, you won't feel ripped off if you visit it.

On the top of the pyramid, there is a 5-ton globe that crowns the monument. Without a doubt, it is one of the essential things if you think about what to see in Quito, the City of the Middle of the World.

Finally, within the same monument, a small museum was created with elements of Ecuador's indigenous culture. Different clothing, as well as a review of the various ethnic groups that this country has, and some of the activities they carried out.

It is undoubtedly a great place to learn about the ancient inhabitants of the country, as well as their traditions and learn about the evolution of Ecuador's gastronomy.

Equatorial Line

From this main monument, a line was drawn in an easterly direction, which marks the equatorial line. Visitors to this place are usually photographed on both sides of the Equator symbolizing the change of hemisphere.

Other attractions

In addition to the main monument and the equator, you can find Other Attractions in this enclosure. There are several permanent exhibition pavilions so that when you go, you have exhibitions to see.

  • Guayasamín Pavilion. In this you can find an exhibition of the different works of Oswaldo Guayasamín, the most famous Ecuadorian painter in history.

  • The French Pavilion is located in the French Geodesic Museum. Here you can see all the information about the studies of the Geodetic Mission and information about the Paris Academy of Sciences.

  • Finally, you can't leave the place without seeing the Planetarium, a replica in model of the city of Quito during the colonial era.

The egg on the nail

An egg can be placed on the head of a nail anywhere in the world and not just in the center of the planet. This is explained in the Museum, where it is assured that the experiment has been carried out since its foundation, 30 years ago. Why an egg?, according to guide Ronaldo Mera, because of its characteristics and density. In the museum of the Middle of the World City, the explanation is that due to the speed at which the Earth rotates, the force of gravity tends to cancel out in the area of the equator, so here balancing something would be a little easier.
